IIDEA, the association representing the national video game industry, has published a report titled Video Games in Italy in 2025, produced by the market research company Ipsos. This report reveals a stable picture compared to the previous year, with mobile devices constituting the main platform and the best-selling titles, as always, being football-related.

The Value of Video Games in Italy

According to the IIDEA report, the total turnover of video games in Italy remains around €2.4 billion, although with a slight decrease: it went from 2.407 billion in 2024 to 2.386 billion in 2025. Of these 2.4 billion, 77% is related to software (1.836 billion, a 1% decrease compared to 2024), while the remaining 23% comes from hardware (550 million, +0.3%).

51% of the 1.836 billion related to software, or 929 million, is generated by mobile devices: almost all of this is spent on microtransactions. The sum of game sales for consoles and PC is much lower: it amounts to "only" €560 million. In an era dominated by digital delivery, it is interesting to note that of these 560 million, as much as 41% (231 million) are titles in physical format

The Profile of the Italian Gamer

The report indicates that 14.2 million people, or 29% of the Italian population, play on any device: this figure is much lower than the average of the 5 main EU markets, which stands at 48%. Of these 14.2 million people, 60% are men and another 60% are under 35 years old. The age group that plays the most is between 12 and 17 years old (62% of people), while the age group that plays the least is between 65 and 75 (7%. The survey examined a sample between 6 and 75 years old).

The average time Italian players dedicate to their passion in a week is 7 hours and 53 minutes, also lower than the EU average (9 hours and 3 minutes). Italian men spend 9 hours and 19 minutes a week, compared to 5 hours and 39 minutes for women. Regarding age groups, the adolescent group from 12 to 17 years old still dominates, with as many as 15 hours and 31 minutes per week.

The most beloved gaming platform by Italians is the one we saw generate the most revenue, namely mobile devices: as many as 11.1 million users out of 14.2 total use them. Compared to smartphones and tablets, consoles are much further behind, with only 6.5 million users; however, consoles are used for more hours on average than mobile (5 hours and 51 minutes per week, compared to 4 hours and 54 minutes). PC closes the list, with 3.7 million users.

Best-Selling Games in Italy

The immortal GTA 5 holds on to third place, and who knows if the sixth installment of the series might aim for the throne in 2026.
