Farewell to Reggie Bannister - Phantasm's Other Horror Icon

Reggie Bannister, unforgettable performer in the horror saga Phantasm, has died at the age of 80. The news was announced by Don Coscarelli, director and creator of the series, who publicly remembered the actor as a friend and a fundamental collaborator.

The Man Behind the Hero of Phantasm

Reggie's character first appeared in the original 1979 film, transforming his role as an ice cream vendor into one of the most recognizable figures in Coscarelli's universe, alongside that of the "undertaker" Angus Scrimm. Bannister then returned in subsequent chapters of the saga, from Phantasm II to Phantasm: Ravager, released in 2016.

It was through that character that Bannister built a special relationship with the horror audience, becoming a regular presence at genre conventions. His career spans over 50 productions in film and television, with appearances in titles such as Wishmaster, Bubba Ho-Tep by Coscarelli himself, and Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation.

The director emphasized how close Bannister was to the character he played on screen, describing him as a loyal, witty person always ready to defend his friends. The actor had also continued to cultivate his passion for music and had founded a company with his wife Gigi active in the production of events, shows, and films.

In recent years, the actor's health had been steadily declining, to the point that a crowdfunding campaign was launched to support costly medical treatments, embraced by thousands of fans. Bannister is survived by his daughter Ellen and his wife Gigi.
