Farewell to James Van Der Beek, he was 48 years old
The news was announced by his wife Kimberly, who asked for respect and privacy for the family.
James Van Der Beek, the iconic face of the cult series Dawson's Creek, has passed away at 48 years old. The actor had been battling stage three colon cancer, diagnosed in August 2023 after a routine colonoscopy. The news was announced by his wife Kimberly, who asked for respect and privacy for the family.
A brief battle with the disease
Van Der Beek had made his illness public in November 2024, recounting his journey through treatments, medical visits, and the emotional difficulty of sharing the diagnosis with his children and parents. A father of 6 children, he had described the illness as a trial capable of changing perspective: less control, more awareness of time and loved ones.
Born in Connecticut in 1977, he achieved global fame in the late 90s playing Dawson Leery for 6 seasons. On the big screen, he was among the protagonists of the splendid Varsity Blues (image below), set in a high school with a challenging American football team, solidifying a success that later led him between cinema and television, from sitcoms to more recent productions.
Just weeks after announcing his cancer, he participated in the TV special The Real Full Monty, aimed at raising awareness about cancer prevention. Until the very end, he spoke of strength, faith, and gratitude for his family.
With him, an interpreter who marked an era of American TV passes away, one who had transformed his personal battle into a message of awareness.
