Diablo IV Takes Slaughter to a New Level with Season 12
Blizzard launches a pure gameplay experiment with demonic transformations and Bethesda crossover, awaiting Lord of Hatred.

If you thought Sanctuary's hell had already reached peak grotesqueness, prepare to rev your chainsaws because the "Rip and Tear" aesthetic is about to engulf Diablo 4. In a stylistic short-circuit that would make gothic purists blanch, Blizzard announced that the Season of Slaughter — officially Season 12 — will not only fill dungeons with demons but will allow players to don the Doom Slayer's armor and transform into the franchise's most iconic nemesis: the Butcher.
It's a systemic experiment that will begin on March 11, 2026 at 10:00 AM PT (7:00 PM in Italy), positioning itself as a necessary bridge update to maintain tension before the launch of the Lord of Hatred expansion, scheduled for late April.
The beating heart of this season, which reduces narrative in favor of a frantic gameplay loop, is the transformation mechanic. Through the consumption of Meaty Offerings, players can activate Slaughter Shrines to assume the form of the Butcher. In this state, the ability bar is completely rewritten, granting access to the famous hook, the overwhelming dash, and a series of brutal blows that transform the player from prey to absolute predator. This metamorphosis will be essential to face the new type of dungeon called Slaughterhouse, an arena designed to test the efficiency of extermination at high levels.
Under the hood, Blizzard brings back the Killstreak system from the past, implementing a rapid kill counter divided into five tiers: Killstreak, Carnage, Devastation, Bloodbath, and Slaughter. The streak timer resets with every direct damage dealt, pushing towards aggression management that is more reminiscent of a modern shooter than a classic isometric RPG. To support this arcade drift, Bloodied Items are introduced, a new quality of equipment that possesses dynamic affixes. The power of these items, which range from movement speed to damage bonuses, scales directly with the active Killstreak level, creating a technical synergy that rewards those who can maintain the flow of combat without interruption.

The integration with the Bethesda universe manifests through the crossover with DOOM: The Dark Ages. While the most aesthetically impactful items, such as character skins and the Mecha Dragon mount, will be available for purchase, players can obtain the saw-shield skin and other thematic trophies for free through the seasonal Reliquary. In parallel, to prepare the ground for the new class arriving with the expansion, Blizzard will offer a free Paladin trial from March 11 to 18, allowing everyone to test the character up to level 25 with transferable progress. With the introduction of five new universal Unique items and the new Bloodied Sigils that drastically increase the difficulty of Nightmare Dungeons, Season 12 is shaping up to be a brutal survival training ground.
