Almost four years after the sensational cancellation of Batgirl, the film continues to be a topic of discussion. Bringing the project back into the spotlight are the new statements by J.K. Simmons, who played Commissioner James Gordon in the comic book movie.

In August 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery, led by new CEO David Zaslav, decided to permanently block the release of the film starring Leslie Grace. Filming had already wrapped and its HBO Max debut seemed imminent, but the studio preferred to shelve the project, using it as a tax write-down.

A Stillborn Film

At the time, the choice was justified by stating that the work did not meet the studio's standards. An explanation that has continued to divide fans and industry insiders over time, also because the film was never distributed or shown to the public.

The debate was reignited by the Oscar-winning actor for Whiplash, during the podcast Happy Sad Confused. The actor described the entire affair as "strange" and recalled that one of the test screenings had not elicited particularly negative reactions. While not expressing a judgment on the film's value, he hinted that the final decision was mainly dictated by corporate evaluations.

His words do not solve the mystery surrounding Batgirl, but they bring back into focus an event that continues to represent one of the most controversial cases in Warner Bros. Discovery's recent history.
