With A Simple Incident, Iranian director Jafar Panahi crafts one of his most subtly unsettling films, transforming an seemingly minor event into a fierce reflection on fear and memory. It all begins with a nighttime road accident, an apparently trivial incident that, however, opens an ever-deepening crack in reality.

A man is recognized by someone who claims to have suffered torture years earlier. From that moment, the film abandons any traditional structure to move into an ambiguous territory, where no one seems certain of their version of events anymore. Panahi avoids the classic thriller and prefers to work on emotional instability: every encounter, every dialogue, every pause reveals the invisible weight of an internalized violence.

A moral hunt within a restless Tehran

The film's strength lies precisely in the normalcy with which horror coexists with everyday life. Amidst weddings, workshops, bookstores, and busy streets, Tehran appears as an anesthetized city, inhabited by people who continue to live while trauma remains buried beneath the surface.

Even the humor, often surprising, never truly lightens the narrative: it only makes it more bitter. Panahi rejects revenge, rhetoric, and easy absolutions. Only doubt remains, and it is precisely there that A Simple Incident strikes deepest.
