Fallout 76: Burning Springs – All the Information
Ohio, Ghouls, and Bounty Hunting in the New Update
Fallout 76, the open-world title set in Bethesda's post-atomic universe but, unlike the original series, intended for a Multiplayer context, debuted in 2018: in these 7 years, a lot of radioactive water has passed under the bridge, and the game has received a whopping 32 updates and 62 patches. Now it's preparing for a new important step: Bethesda invited us to a special press event where Jon Rush and Bill LaCoste lifted the veil that has so far covered the new expansion titled Burning Springs.
Fallout 76: Burning Springs: A Trip to Ohio
The new region of Burning Springs will stretch beyond the old state border that separated Appalachia and West Virginia from Ohio. Attracted by an SOS signal from a PipBoy, players will be able to cross over by traversing a bridge where, to be honest, various signs suggesting “no trespassing” will abound. But the allure of a damsel in distress is strong, even at the cost of diving headfirst into a probable trap: in the new main plot, we will find ourselves fighting for our very survival in an arena full of ghouls, mutants, and deathclaws, under the dominion of the menacing Rust King.
However, the town of Highway Town will take center stage, where a familiar face will be waiting for us.
Fallout 76: Bounty Hunting and an Unmistakable Ghoul
At the Bounty Hunters' headquarters, we will meet the Ghoul. Not a ghoul any ghoul [after all, playable characters, for some time now, can also be ghouls]: “THE” Ghoul, the one from the TV series broadcast by Amazon Prime, played by Walton Goggins, who also lent his voice to his video game alter-ego. In the subsequent Q&A session with the two developers, someone actually objected that the Ghoul's presence in Fallout 76 is a bit of an anachronism, given that the game is set many years before the series and in a completely different region. However, Jon and Bill justified this by specifying that the character's age is not actually known, that ghoulification can greatly prolong life, and that he is undoubtedly a well-traveled individual, so we are not facing a real problem. We wouldn't be surprised, therefore, if in the second season of the series, the Ghoul were to reference his past in Ohio...
Aside from these trifles and the new story chapters that naturally await players, Bounty Hunting constitutes the main gameplay novelty of the expansion. These are divided into two categories: Grunt Hunts will be low-level hunts intended for single players, useful for scrounging up some extra caps, collecting new weapons and equipment, and improving one's reputation with the Hunters. Head Hunts, on the other hand, will be true Events to be tackled, if possible, with a cohesive group: they will be available for limited time windows and continuously replaced and re-proposed, like the Events in the base game. They will have a significantly higher difficulty level but will obviously yield more substantial rewards.
Fallout 76: Burning Springs: An Experience for Everyone
Also from the live Q&A session after the presentation and the substantial b-roll from the Alpha version of the expansion, the developers had the opportunity to provide some extra details on the nature and content of the new package, generally defined as a “Megaton” update. It's a decidedly large new map, vaster than any other update introduced previously, with 20 new locations such as the city of Athens or the amusement park of Dino Peaks, with slides and children's rides shaped like smiling dinosaurs.
The Burning Springs region will be immediately accessible to all players: there is no minimum level required to cross the famous bridge that will lead to Ohio, and to be honest, it's not even essential to use the bridge [you can swim across the river that marks the border]. However, Rush and LaCoste advised new players not to worry about reaching the new content at all costs but to enjoy the game experience and exploration in total freedom, because the core philosophy of Fallout 76 has always been and still is to wander spontaneously through the game world.
Fallout 76: Burning Springs and Inspiration from Past Titles
During the development of this new package, the developers often stated that they had drawn inspiration from two beloved chapters of the brand, namely Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas: obviously, this topic emerged during the Q&A session. Jon Rush and Bill LaCoste explained that this inspiration is expressed primarily in the philosophy of the new region's setting, which can be summarized in the four words: danger, wasteland, deathclaws, and raiders.
For the rest, the long b-roll showed us many gameplay scenes, from the Rust King's arena to the encounter with the Ghoul, to hunts against radioactive scorpions and ghouls, up to multiplayer missions against hordes of enemies including a Legendary Burning Ogua.
Fallout 76: Burning Springs: When It Arrives
The launch of Fallout 76: Burning Springs is scheduled for early December 2025, coinciding with the second season of the TV series on Amazon Prime. Until then, Stay Tuned!
