For almost twenty years, Wanted has remained one of those titles often cited when discussing unconventional action movies. Today, however, the possibility of a Wanted 2 is no longer just nostalgia: the project exists, but its fate depends on a rather unusual external factor.

The hope was rekindled by Timur Bekmambetov, director of the original 2008 film. Wanted represented his Hollywood debut and a success that made its mark thanks to an extreme visual style, comic book violence, and a cast led by Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, and certainly not least the unforgettable Terence Stamp. A film that over time has become a small cult classic of modern action.

Angelina Jolie Remains the Unknown

According to Bekmambetov, however, the real key to a sequel is not tied to the actors, but rather to the outcome of Mercy, his new film scheduled for 2026. The director was direct: if Mercy performs well, the Studio might greenlight Wanted 2; otherwise, the project risks being halted.

Mercy is already at the center of a curious contrast: panned by critics, but enthusiastically received by the public. A sign that could play in the director's favor, as he is convinced that audience consensus matters more than professional judgments.

As for the cast, James McAvoy's return seems plausible, while Angelina Jolie's participation remains more uncertain, despite her being an absolute icon of the first film. Meanwhile, the Wanted universe continues to show potential. Surprisingly, its future hangs on a completely different story.
