The Uprising, Paul Greengrass's new film divides critics

Paul Greengrass's new film arrives for its first critical reception without universal agreement. The Uprising – Rebel Heart (The Rise of Robin Hood), starring Andrew Garfield, has so far garnered 55% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 29 reviews.

This figure accompanies a project that has recently attracted attention for an unexpected detail. Initially presented as a historical drama about the English Peasants' Revolt of 1381, the film has begun to more openly show its connection to the figure of Robin Hood.

Garfield plays Ploughman, a farmer who finds himself involved in the rebellion against the power of King Richard II. The Studio's new communication has suggested that this very story could represent one of the possible cinematic origins of the Sherwood myth.

The Robin Hood who is never called Robin Hood

The choice provoked some online reactions to the point that explicit references to the one who stole from the rich to give to the poor were subsequently removed from the promotion. Meanwhile, reviews seem to focus primarily on the relationship between the political component of the story and its more legendary aspect.

Greengrass and Garfield, however, are highlighted among the most successful elements, while the judgment on the film remains decidedly divided. The result therefore leaves The Uprising in a peculiar position: more than a new version of the myth, it could be a story that tries to recount its birth without directly naming it. The Uprising - Rebel Heart will be released in Italian cinemas on November 5, 2026.
