The Last of Us – Neil Druckmann Steps Down as Series Lead
Among the reasons is the creation of a new, major video game
Creative mind behind the video game saga The Last of Us and co-creator of the HBO television adaptation, Neil Druckmann has announced his departure from the role of showrunner and executive producer before the start of the third season. The decision, which has surprised fans, comes after two hugely successful seasons made with Craig Mazin.
In a statement, Druckmann explained the reasons for his choice: “With work on the second season now complete, it’s the right time for me to dedicate myself fully to Naughty Dog and our future projects, including the new game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, as well as my responsibilities as studio director and chief creative officer.”
Return to the old love for video games
The author clarified that there were no conflicts with HBO: “The reasons are purely professional. I wanted to bring The Last of Us to a wider audience, elevate Naughty Dog, and demonstrate that a video game can become a great series.” He also admitted the difficulty of balancing the dual role: “Being co-showrunner while directing a studio and writing a video game was exhausting.”
While stepping back from day-to-day work, he will continue to follow the series as a supervisor: “My job now is to guide from above. I hope season 3 will be as faithful as the first, which I consider the top standard for adaptations.” Creative responsibility passes to the rest of the team.
