Just weeks before its arrival, the new Supergirl is already at the center of discussions about its potential box office performance. Early estimates from the US market indicate a debut of approximately $55 million, a figure that several observers consider unreassuring for a production with a declared budget of $175 million.

The figure appears particularly modest when compared to the recent success of Superman, which opened its run in American theaters with $125 million before surpassing $600 million worldwide.

The Weight of Comparison with Other Comic Book Movies

According to analysts, a debut in the $55 million range places Supergirl in the same bracket previously occupied by titles like The Flash and other comic book movies that failed to become commercial phenomena. To break even, the film would need to approach $315 million globally, a goal that is far from guaranteed in the current cinematic landscape.

Complicating the situation further is the summer calendar, characterized by particularly strong competitors. DC Studios can, however, cling to one positive element: surveys show a good level of awareness of the film among various audience segments.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Supergirl will bring to the big screen a harsher and more adventurous story than what was seen in Superman. The main challenge remains: transforming initial interest into an economic return that helps support the future of the new DCU. Italian release on June 25, 2026.
