Super Mario Galaxy – The New Film in the Video Game Multiverse
There are plenty of suggestions related to the characters' childhoods, stimulating hypotheses about the narrative structure's path
The direction taken by the new animated film dedicated to Mario appears much more ambitious than expected. What seemed like a rather linear adaptation of Super Mario Galaxy is instead taking on the contours of a true journey through different eras, styles, and imaginaries of the Nintendo saga.
From the most recent promotional materials, the artistic choice clearly emerges: not to limit itself to a single reference game, but to build a story capable of blending multiple souls of the Mario universe. The setting of the journey between worlds openly recalls Super Mario Odyssey, while some environments and situations wink at the surrealism of Super Mario Bros. 2.
Journey into the Mario Video Game Universe
Most surprising are the suggestions related to the characters' childhoods. The appearance of Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, along with Yoshi, directly refers to Yoshi's Island, raising interesting questions about the film's narrative structure: flashbacks, alternative timelines, or temporary transformations?
In this mosaic, Super Mario Galaxy remains central not so much for the recreated levels, but for its tone: sense of wonder, epic scale, and a more melancholic vein embodied by Rosalina (Rosalina). It's a risky bet, but consistent with the history of a character who has always known how to reinvent himself. The release is set for April 1, 2026. Only then will we know if this audacious mix will truly work on the big screen.
