StarCraft Returns in 2030 as Open World Shooter, Blizzard Entrusts Project to Dan Hay
The series abandons real-time strategy for the first time for an open-world project led by the former head of Far Cry.
Blizzard announced the return of StarCraft at BlizzCon 2026, this time in the form of an open-world shooter. The new project is simply called STARCRAFT and is scheduled for spring 2030 (practically a lifetime away!).
Leading the development is Dan Hay, former head of the Far Cry series at Ubisoft, who recounted on stage that he tried to join Blizzard 25 years ago. The opportunity came much later, when the company entrusted him with creating a team dedicated to the return of the historic sci-fi series.
According to Blizzard's announcement, the game will once again be set in the Koprulu sector and will feature an open-world structure. Hay described it as a shooter in which "everything must be earned", although no gameplay or more precise details on mechanics have been shown yet.
The announcement was accompanied by the cinematic Dominion, while Blizzard has not yet announced the platforms on which the game will arrive. For StarCraft, this is a significant change: the series, born and made famous as a real-time strategy game, thus returns with a completely different project and a rather distant launch window.
