Sony might reconsider ditching disc games

Recent sales data makes the change in scenario significant

The transition to digital planned by Sony for January 2028 might not be an irreversible decision yet. The company has reportedly consulted developers about the future of physical distribution, including a question in the survey about potential issues related to selling games on disc.

What makes the survey significant is recent sales data. Marvel's Wolverine reportedly generated approximately 130 million dollars in the first 3 days, with 23% of the revenue coming from physical copies. For 6 of the 7 main first-party titles examined, the retail component represented between 32% and 47% of sales.

The physical market certainly hasn't disappeared

These numbers could prompt Sony to evaluate the consequences of abandoning physical media more carefully, although there is currently no confirmation of a change in plans. The company still maintains the January 2028 target for new productions, while games released before that date can continue to be re-printed on disc.

The rumor, therefore, doesn't indicate a reversal that has already occurred, but rather that the transition might still be subject to internal evaluation.
