Overwatch, Blizzard Unveils Doctrine: New Support Hero Arrives in October
The new hero will arrive with Season 5 on October 6, but Blizzard is already allowing players to try him for free until September 14.
Blizzard unveiled Doctrine, Overwatch's 54th hero, during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026. This new Support hero is built around a unique interpretation of the vampire myth, where dark powers are combined with technology and a series of mechanical, bat-like drones.
The good news is that you won't have to wait for the next season's launch to try him out. As confirmed by Blizzard in the Overwatch announcement, Doctrine is already available through a limited-time Hero Trial, open to both BlizzCon attendees and players at home until September 14.
His playstyle revolves around the manipulation of life force. Doctrine uses a scepter capable of healing allies and striking opponents, while Infusions allow him to modify the behavior of his abilities. Completing the kit are the distinctive bat-shaped drones, further reinforcing the "technological vampire" identity chosen by the team.
Doctrine will also play a direct role in the story. The character is an ally of Doomfist, and his liberation from the Icelandic prison of Watchpoint: Grímsvötn introduces the events that will lead to the conclusion of The Reign of Talon, Overwatch's first annual narrative arc. The same structure will also become a new Escort map.
His definitive debut is scheduled with Overwatch Season 5, arriving on October 6, 2026. The update will also bring significant reworks for Roadhog and Sombra, with the latter set to transition from a Damage role to a Support role.
