Neill Blomkamp is once again making headlines with Nightborne, a 13-minute science fiction short film that marks the debut of Barley Studios, his newly founded company dedicated to producing works created with the support of artificial intelligence.
The director of films such as District 9, Elysium, Chappie, and Gran Turismo, Blomkamp describes the project as a test bed for a future feature film developed with the same methodology. The director clarified that Nightborne is a collaboration with real concept artists and performers, emphasizing that AI was used as a creative tool and not as a substitute for human work.
A Divisive Experiment
Set amidst military conspiracies and advanced technology, the short film tells the story of a U.S. Army pilot declared dead on a mission, while evidence emerges of a secret program designed to bring back the fallen by transforming them into supersoldiers. The narrative takes the form of a mockumentary, recalling the style that made the South African director famous.
The initiative has already sparked debate online. Some see artificial intelligence as a natural evolution of cinematic tools, while others fear a negative impact on creative professions. Meanwhile, the new adaptation of Starship Troopers also remains in development, though no substantial news continues to emerge on that front.
