Metro 2039: Delve into the Dark Heart of Post-Apocalyptic Moscow

MILAN – April 16, 2026: Following an exciting cinematic and gameplay preview created in collaboration with Xbox, we are pleased to announce METRO 2039, the highly anticipated new chapter in the METRO saga, from acclaimed developers 4A Games. METRO 2039 will arrive on Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic this winter.

 
The official presentation highlights METRO 2039's carefully crafted, story-driven single-player FPS campaign, psychological horror, and claustrophobic, immersive atmosphere.  The 15-minute stream featured Jon Bloch (Executive Producer), Andriy mLs Shevchenko (Creative Director), and Pavel Ulmer (Co-Creative Director & Lead Audio Designer) from 4A Games, along with a stunning 6-minute announcement trailer and a gameplay preview.  The gameplay was captured using a mix of real-time gameplay and cinematics, offering fans a taste of the series' haunting environments, stunning visual fidelity, and iconic METRO gear, including distinctive weapons and the wrist-mounted watch, during a breathtaking combat encounter against mutants.

THE YEAR IS 2039.

For a quarter of a century, the last survivors of the nuclear war have been engaged in a bitter conflict deep within the subway tunnels, beneath the poisoned city of Moscow.  Now, the underground factions are united under a single banner: the Novoreich, led by a new Führer: the legendary Spartan, Hunter. The Führer promises salvation and a new life for the people on the surface, but in reality, communities remain trapped in the depths of the Metro, submerged by propaganda and disinformation, and suffering under his authoritarian regime.

You step into the shoes of the Stranger, a recluse tormented by violent waking nightmares, forced to embark on a harrowing journey back into the Metro, a place he had sworn never to return to. The Stranger will be the fully voiced main protagonist, representing a significant step forward towards greater immersion in METRO's iconic and evocative narrative.

A CLASSIC METRO STORY, TOLD FROM A UKRAINIAN PERSPECTIVE.

4A Games was founded in Ukraine and remains majority Ukrainian, but now with a team spanning over 25 different nationalities, united by the Ukrainian spirit of determination and pride in their projects.  Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has directly influenced and shaped the development of METRO 2039, with its story shifting to focus acutely on choices, actions, consequences, and the cost of securing a future.  While told from a distinctly Ukrainian perspective, METRO 2039 remains an authentically METRO story.  Now working primarily from two locations, Kyiv and Malta, the goal remains the same: to create an experience that is unmistakably METRO.
