Mayday - Reynolds and Branagh Together in New Apple Action Film
When the (spy) couple risks breaking up in the midst of the Cold War
The first official image of Mayday was enough to make it clear that Ryan Reynolds has no intention of slowing down. After years spent dominating ironic action, the actor returns as the protagonist of a new high-spectacle project, alongside a decidedly unexpected scene partner like Kenneth Branagh.
The promotional shot conveys that pleasant sensation of irony and forced-pairing dynamics. Mayday is set during the Cold War and tells the story of the encounter-clash between Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a US Navy pilot played by Reynolds, and Nikolai Ustinov, a former KGB agent with the face and charisma of Branagh. Two opposite worlds, forced to collaborate when everything goes wrong.
When the War is Semi-Cold
The project originated for Apple TV+, which has already set the global release for September 4, 2026, aiming for a title clearly conceived as a cinematic event, albeit on the small screen. Behind the camera are John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the duo behind Dungeons & Dragons - Honor Among Thieves, suggesting a well-dosed rhythm and irony.
With Reynolds also involved through his Maximum Effort and a solid supporting cast featuring faces of the caliber of David Morse, Mayday presents itself as a mainstream action film that plays on the chemistry between its protagonists. The first image doesn't explain everything, but it suggests that fun will be an integral part of the mission.
