Amidst the new wave of sequels and reboots, Matrix 5 is official. Among the big questions is also one related to the return of Laurence Fishburne as the iconic Morpheus. The actor responded during the New York Comic Con 2025 panel with the calm and wisdom that distinguish him: "It depends on how good the script is, if it makes sense. I don't know if it does."

A response that leaves the hypothesis open, above all reflecting the essence of the character himself and the desire not to act out of nostalgia, but out of conviction. Fishburne seems willing to return only if the new chapter can maintain the philosophical depth that made the original trilogy unique, and no less, his presence.

Not Returning for Just Any Story

The direction of Matrix 5 is entrusted to Drew Goddard, author of The Martian and creator of the series Daredevil. This time the Wachowski sisters will remain behind the scenes, marking the first production in the franchise without them at the helm.

After the interlude of Matrix Resurrections (2021), in which Morpheus was played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, the idea of Fishburne's return has already sparked enthusiasm. In a world of simulations and choices, even off-screen, there are those who do not wish to give in to just any story, remembering how meaning is more important than mere spectacle.
