Kiln: Double Fine's New, Eccentric Game
Mold your warrior and then… smash it to pieces
Double Fine Productions is a San Francisco-based studio founded by Tim Schafer, a game designer famous for the Monkey Island series. The studio's debut work was Psychonauts, a platformer acclaimed for its unconventional art direction, a recurring hallmark of Double Fine's productions. The studio's new game also stands out for its originality.
What is Kiln
Together with Xbox publisher, Double Fine announces Kiln, a kind of arena fighter where the combatants are… clay pots. A fundamental part of the experience is the molding: depending on the shape, size, and quantity of clay used, the pots will possess different abilities. The gameplay experience of Kiln thus begins with the shaping of one's warrior.
Each pot will feature a basic attack, an aerial attack, and a special attack. In Kiln, there are 24 different special moves. After shaping your fighter and customizing its appearance with various details, such as handles or stickers, you enter the arena: a team battle, where the goal is to extinguish the opponent's kiln. The beauty of the game is that participants smash other users' pots: after creation, comes destruction.
When and Where Kiln Will Be Released
If this creative and unconventional experience piques your interest, know that Kiln's launch window is set for spring 2026. You will find this video game on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC via Xbox PC, and Steam. As an Xbox Game Studios title, it will naturally be available day one on the Game Pass catalog.
