Hope: Trailer Unveils Na Hong-jin's Alien Blockbuster
Aggressive creatures, extraterrestrial corpses, and a gigantic spaceship among the clouds
Ferocious creatures, skies darkened by colossal spaceships, and a completely isolated Korean village: the first trailer for Hope (you can read our review here) showcases the ambitious SF film by Na Hong-jin, director of The Wailing. A massive project for South Korean cinema, entrusting Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander with the task of leading an alien invasion story far removed from classic American blockbusters.
The released images show aggressive creatures, extraterrestrial corpses, and a gigantic spaceship suspended among the clouds, with atmospheres reminiscent of War of the Worlds, A Quiet Place, and even Nope. But the heart of the film seems to be primarily its setting: a remote village near the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, cut off from the world also due to devastating fires.
An Alien Invasion Immersed in Korean Fears
And it is precisely this element that distinguishes Hope from other expensive international attempts to imitate Hollywood. The trailer, in fact, emphasizes the feeling of isolation, fear, and constant threat linked to the Korean territory, transforming the alien attack into something more concrete and unsettling.
After years of soulless global productions that failed at the box office, Hope seems to want to follow a different path: using the language of grand spectacular cinema without sacrificing cultural identity.
