Heat 2: Robert De Niro Breaks Silence on New McCauley
The presence of another actor wouldn't just be about age.
Robert De Niro isn't closely following the development of Heat 2, but a question about Michael Mann's film still elicited his opinion on the possible new face of Neil McCauley.
During the promotion of The Whisper Man, the actor was asked what he thought about the possibility of Stephen Graham playing the character he himself made famous in 1995. De Niro admitted he didn't know much about the project and hadn't yet read Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner's novel from which the film will be born. However, he was decidedly positive about Graham: "He's a great choice." And one can only agree about this great British actor with high potential.
The New Challenge Would Come Through Stephen Graham's Talent
The presence of another actor wouldn't just be about age. Heat 2 spans two different periods: the story continues after the original film, but a substantial part of the story returns to the years before the meeting between McCauley, Chris Shiherlis, and Vincent Hanna.
Mann can therefore portray a criminal still far from the man seen in the 1995 film, without resorting to a digitally de-aged De Niro. Graham, incidentally, has already crossed paths with Mann's cinema: the two worked together in Public Enemies, where the actor played Baby Face Nelson.
Other names circulated for Heat 2, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale, have not yet received official confirmation. The project could enter production by the end of 2026, but definitive announcements are also lacking on this point. For now, therefore, De Niro's "blessing" is enough to imagine a passing of the torch worthy of his magnificent 1995 performance.
