Dick Hallorann, from Welcome to Derry to The Shining: the bridge between King's nightmares
With the eighth episode of It: Welcome to Derry, the HBO series takes one of the most significant steps in Stephen King's narrative universe, establishing a direct, and narratively powerful, connection with The Shining. Dick Hallorann, played by Chris Chalk, is not a simple reference or homage: he is the exact same character born in the 1977 novel and immortalized by Scatman Crothers' extraordinary performance in Stanley Kubrick's film.

The series thus reveals an essential piece of Hallorann's past, placing him in a coherent and shared timeline with other Kingian masterpieces. A universe where Evil, with a capital "E", manifests in different, but deeply connected forms, in a network of references that confirms the cosmic and cyclical vision of horror typical of the Maine author.
Who is Dick Hallorann from It: Welcome to Derry?
In Welcome to Derry, Hallorann presents himself as a soldier with a strong extrasensory sensitivity: he perceives Evil, reads thoughts, and has visions of the future. A power that the series does not explicitly name until a certain point, but which long-time fans will immediately recognize: the shining. The "shining", precisely.
It is an archetypal force in King's universe, a psychic spark that runs through his works and connects some of his most emblematic characters. Hallorann, in this sense, becomes a witness to Evil, a psychic called, multiple times in his life, to confront entities that defy all human logic.
The connection to The Shining becomes explicit in the finale of episode 8: Hallorann, addressing another character, says he is leaving to start a new job at a hotel. "A hotel," he says, leaving an unspoken implication that more attentive viewers cannot ignore.
It seems that the encounter with Pennywise, the struggle against a cyclical and multifaceted Evil, has made him capable of recognizing horror when it reappears, years later, in the rooms of the Overlook Hotel.
Dick Hallorann in The Shining
In The Shining, Dick Hallorann is the head chef of the Overlook Hotel. From his first encounter with Danny Torrance, he reveals that he possesses the same gift as the child: the "shining", a form of telepathy and clairvoyance that allows him to communicate mentally, perceive supernatural presences, and "see" past or future events.
It is Hallorann who explains to Danny that the Overlook is not simply a hotel, but a place charged with negative energies. Would you like to watch The Shining? The film is available on Amazon.
