Blizzard will bring Diablo out of video games with a new animated series developed in collaboration with Netflix. The announcement came during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, where company president Johanna Faries confirmed the project and anticipated that the operation could represent only the first step in a broader strategy dedicated to the group's intellectual properties.

The collaboration was confirmed during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, an event where Blizzard had already promised important news about the future of Sanctuary. As also reported by RPG Site, the Diablo series is currently in development at Netflix, but for now, information practically stops there. Blizzard has not announced a release window, the number of episodes, the animation studio involved, the cast, or which period of the saga's long chronology will be used as the setting.

Faries, however, clarified that the agreement should not be considered an isolated experiment. "Diablo, I promise you, is just the beginning," she stated during the event, adding that further details will arrive as soon as they can be shared.

Warcraft and Overwatch Remain Possibilities for Now

The most interesting part of the announcement therefore concerns what might come next. According to Video Games Chronicle, Blizzard has confirmed that "big discussions" are underway regarding transmedia projects for Warcraft, Overwatch, and other company properties. However, this point requires an important distinction: at the moment, no series dedicated to these franchises have been announced, and it has not been confirmed that any future productions would necessarily be made with Netflix.

For Blizzard, this is still a rather clear change in perspective. The company seems intent on no longer exclusively considering its universes as video game franchises, leveraging their characters and settings also through cinema and TV series (and hopefully other books). Diablo will be the first concrete test of this new strategy, while Warcraft and especially Overwatch represent two natural candidates thanks to the amount of narrative material already built over the years.

To find out what story the Netflix series will tell, we will have to wait. Blizzard has promised further information in the future, without indicating when it will arrive for now.
