Buffy New Sunnydale – Bad News for the Series
Unfortunately, the actress shared the news with fans in a video that leaves no doubt.
The television project titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, conceived as a continuation of the universe of the cult series from the nineties, has been canceled by Hulu even before filming began. The decision was confirmed by Sarah Michelle Gellar herself, who was set to reprise her role as the legendary Buffy Summers. The actress shared the news with fans in a video, explaining that the platform chose not to proceed with the series' development despite the work already started on the pilot.
The project envisioned a mixed formula of continuity and renewal. Buffy would return as a central figure in the narrative universe, but the story would primarily follow a new generation of slayers. Among the involved faces was Ryan Kiera Armstrong, destined to play a young protagonist ready to inherit the legacy of the famous heroine.
Bolt from the blue with production underway
The pilot episode would have also featured a highly prestigious name behind the camera: Chloé Zhao, Oscar winner for Nomadland, had been chosen to direct the first episode. The screenplay, on the other hand, was entrusted to sisters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, already known for their work on the series Poker Face.
Despite initial interest, Hulu decided to halt the project's development. A choice that we imagine will disappoint many fans of the original series, which aired between 1997 and 2003 and became one of the most influential titles in fantasy television. The future of the franchise may not be entirely closed, however: Hollywood has shown multiple times that sagas beloved by the public can find new paths even after a sudden stop.
