Barb Wire - Pamela Anderson and the New TV Series
The '96 film was a bitter flop, which over time became a cult classic of kitsch and cyberpunk.
'90s nostalgia is making a comeback with a project that has surprised many: Pamela Anderson is preparing the return of Barb Wire in a television series format. The iconic Baywatch star will serve as an executive producer through And-Her-Sons Productions, founded with her sons Brandon Thomas Lee and Dylan Jagger Lee.
The stated goal: to bring back cult female heroines, reinterpreting them in a contemporary key. Set during an imaginary American civil war in 2017, the original film followed Barbara Kopetski, a.k.a. Barb Wire, the baddest and most heavily armed bounty hunter in the free city of Steel Harbor. The character originated in the pages of Dark Horse Comics. With the actress yet to be chosen, neither production nor broadcast dates have been announced.
"Don't call me Babe!"
The project marks a clear departure from the 1996 film, which at the time grossed just $3.8 million against a budget of $23 million and was panned by critics. Despite this, the film has over the years become a kitsch cult classic, remembered for its cyberpunk aesthetic, the decadent atmosphere of Steel Harbor, and the rebellious charisma of its curvaceous protagonist.
The new series will instead aim to rediscover the original spirit of the comics, which between 1994 and 1996 told the adventures of Barb Wire as a symbol of independence and resistance to a corrupt system.
