Oscars 2026: "One Battle After Another" and "Sinners" are the winners of the edition, with Paul Thomas Anderson taking home three statuettes
Paul Thomas Anderson takes home three highly anticipated Oscars, "Sinners" is close behind, while the real loser is Chalamet with his "Marty Supreme."
After decades of waiting, it was finally Paul Thomas Anderson's night: the director of Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, and Magnolia, who had never managed to win a statuette in his career despite being considered one of the most important and influential living filmmakers, took home the three coveted statuettes in just over three hours: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, as well as the statuette for Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn.
In the end, however, there was a duel with "Sinners" and, for once, the Academy's choices showed great balance: Ryan Coogler's film won for Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan (leaving Timothée Chalamet empty-handed for the third time), and awards for score, editing, and especially cinematography: Autumn Durald Arkapaw becomes the first woman to win in the category ever. Netflix also emerged as a surprise winner of the evening, taking home five significant Oscars with films that never threatened the main contenders: Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein garnered acclaim on the technical side (costumes, makeup, production design) while the animated phenomenon Kpop Demon Hunter brought two historic Oscars to Korean music, winning for Best Song and Best Animated Feature Film.
The big loser of the evening is Chalamet's "Marty Supreme" which not only, as mentioned, missed out on the Oscar for Best Actor, but despite many nominations, went home without even one statuette. Chloé Zhao's "Hamnet" avoided going home empty-handed thanks to its protagonist Jessie Buckley, one of the few locked-in wins of a ceremony that saw an Oscar go to another horror film besides "Sinners": Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for her unsettling role in "Weapons." On the international front, in a challenge open until the very end, Norway prevailed: in the end, Joachim Trier's "Sentimental Value" took home the Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
The first, historic Oscar for Best Casting – which was awarded for the first time in this edition – is among the technical statuettes that allowed "Sinners" to trail "One Battle After Another" in the ranking of most awarded films, just one length behind.
