Twenty-three years after revolutionizing horror cinema with 28 Days Later, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland return to that devastated world with 28 Years Later, the first chapter of a new trilogy. At its center is Alfie Williams, a young emerging talent already seen in His Dark Materials, flanked by Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes.

The film opens with a surprising prologue, mixing childlike innocence and impending horror, before moving to a more intimate narrative: the coming-of-age journey of a boy in a society reduced to its bare essentials, confined to an island connected to the mainland only by a fragile passage at low tide. Here, the survivors face not only zombies with unsettling mutations, but also the moral ghosts of an extinct civilization.

28 Years Later and the Middle Ages of the Third Millennium

At almost seventy years old, Boyle still demonstrates energy and visual creativity: from the experimental use of iPhones for sequences reminiscent of "bullet time," to impressionistic paintings in moments of calm, the director imprints a unique and recognizable style. The performances are convincing: Comer is intense as a courageous mother, Williams fragile but credible in the role of a teenager forced to grow up too soon. Taylor-Johnson remains in the background, while Fiennes shines despite limited screen time.

28 Years Later is not the action and terror film promised by the trailers, but an adventurous drama that leaves many questions unanswered, paving the way for future chapters. Not a disappointment, but a work that risks unsettling those who expect a classic blockbuster, especially those who have not yet discovered the narrative style Boyle imprinted since the first film. The beginning of a larger project, the next film has already been announced with the title 28 Years Later – The Bone Temple, will be directed by Nia DaCosta and will debut in Italy on January 15, 2026. As for the future of the saga, it is known that if Boyle's film wins over audiences and critics, he himself will close the trilogy.

28 Years Later - How it looks

Shot natively digital with multiple hardware (DJI Inspire 3, GoPro Hero 4K, Panasonic AU-EVA1, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max) at 4K resolution and a corresponding master from which this notably diverse UHD version was created. Unexpected ultra-panoramic 2.76:1 format (3840 x 2160/23.97p), HEVC encoding on a triple-layer BD-100. The various optics and image handling capabilities of the cameras used for the filming significantly influenced the texture of the resulting material, where transitions with aliasing and lower perception of elements in the background and backdrops are experienced. This should not be considered a limitation of the encoding but the artistic imprint of the creators.

In this regard, we recall the unusual choices made by Boyle himself since the progenitor film of 2002, made with a Canon XL-1 camcorder at PAL video resolution (720 x 576), except for the last scene with 35mm film. An overall excellent technical result, which further approaches the work of cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle (28 Days Later) for those with native 10-bit screens who can take advantage of Dolby Vision and remarkable blacks.

28 Years Later - How it sounds

The spectacle continues on the audio front, with dual DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (16 bit) Italian and English, which opens up an interesting musical panorama with effects, stage presence from the rear channels, bass, and a level of involvement that increases with a true HT system.

It reaches reference level only with the second English Dolby TrueHD 7.1.4 track with ATMOS objects, the only 24 bit track that delivers even more intense emotions, immersive and more sensitive even to the most subtle sound elements.

28 Years Later - The extras
