Drop Duchy: The North DLC Review of the Newly Released DLC
Drop Duchy: The North is the new expansion
Everyone who loves Tetris, card games, and roguelikes must (or should?) give Drop Duchy a chance, as it skillfully blends the aforementioned elements to deliver a well-rounded experience for all types of users (or not) who want a fun, immediate, yet challenging experience.
WE GO NORTH
The North DLC for Drop Duchy introduces a series of innovations that significantly transform the gameplay experience, expanding strategic possibilities and adding a level of complexity that deviates from traditional dynamics. The new Viking faction is the heart of the expansion: these warriors no longer act in chains as in the base game, but strike independently, allowing for targeted attacks and breaking the rigidity of classic sequences. This choice makes combat more tactical and less predictable, but requires careful management because the loss of the typical chain synergy can penalize those accustomed to established strategies.
Alongside this innovation, we find the looting mechanic, which allows you to destroy your own buildings to obtain immediate resources: a risky decision that opens up new deck-building opportunities, but which can compromise the solidity of your base if used lightly. Completing the picture is Fury, a system that accumulates points every time the shield takes damage and, once the threshold is reached, allows you to generate extra combat buildings, adding an element of dynamic progression during battles. The package includes eight new cards and twelve dedicated questlines for the faction, as well as new bosses that appear at the end of Act I and Act III, offering more challenging and diverse encounters compared to the original campaign.
THE DLC FACTOR
As with any paid additional content, the price is (almost) always much higher than it makes sense when compared to the main game; in this case, we are talking about approximately four euros, a contained amount, but the fact remains that it is only an additional faction and a few extra cards. It should be noted that along with the DLC, a free patch was released that introduces Ascension mode with ten levels and customizable modifiers, three new bosses, twelve constellation cards, and the ability to undo the last move, further enriching the base game (how useful!).
In summary, The North is an expansion designed for those who desire a deeper challenge and a less linear strategic approach, with bold mechanics that reward risk and planning. However, those who prefer the fluidity of the original system might find some choices, such as mandatory looting in non-battle rounds, an element that slows down the pace and requires adaptation. It is recommended content for those who love to experiment and seek variety, while for those who aim for continuity, it might not be essential.
