The Dark Arisen expansion had been in the air for a long time and arrives with the exact name of the very first chapter's DLC. Let's start with the fact that to access the main content of the expansion, a character of at least level 40 is recommended, which you will logically reach in the endgame, as you will hardly be below level 34, but if you've done like me, almost everything playable among the quests, you'll even exceed 50, so no-problem. You can indeed restart from New Game Plus with all the serenity in the world, arrive at the capital of Vermund, Vernworth, and from there discover how to find a way to access the new game area.

New Equipment for New Adventures

The most obvious novelty is the Desolate Domain, a vast northern region covered in snow and ice that introduces new scenarios, hostile weather conditions, and completely new areas to explore. The environment is not just an aesthetic change: the first human settlements immediately reveal the difficulties of life in those lands, but at the same time show a population hardened by years of survival, better equipped than the inhabitants of the southern regions. Exploration is rewarded through a new relic-based system, precious artifacts obtainable by facing the dangers of the Desolate Domain and new dungeons. These artifacts can be recovered, evaluated, and used to unlock new weapons, advanced abilities, and powerful enhancements, offering a dedicated progression that encourages the search for the rarest treasures and most challenging trials. The new weapons represent one of the main reasons to venture into the most dangerous areas of the expansion, especially for those who wish to optimize their endgame equipment.

Among the novelties are also the twelve Trial Grounds dungeons, designed to seriously test the player's and their pawns' abilities. These are not just simple secondary areas: these dungeons constitute a fundamental part of the expansion's endgame content and are scattered both in the new region and in the original world. Inside them are some of the most valuable equipment in the entire add-on package, as well as the most severe challenges Dragon's Dogma 2 has ever offered.

New customization options for our hero and Pawns complete the picture, with additional hairstyles and tattoos that allow even deeper characterization of one's characters.

New Enemies and Old Troubles

We are faced with a host of new enemies designed to make the exploration of Norgan much more dangerous than what was seen in the base game. The frozen lands of the north host creatures such as the colossal Norgan Giant, capable of using frost to immobilize opponents, and the fearsome ice dragon Fimbl, guardian of some of the expansion's most precious relics. Added to these are the ferocious Beorcan warriors and the return of the unsettling Evil Eye, a presence that series veterans will immediately recognize.

The variety of enemies is still wider than it might initially seem. In addition to the new creatures, many of the adversities already known in the base game have been revisited through more aggressive behaviors, more elaborate attack patterns, and a greater ability to exploit the surrounding territory. Capcom seems to have preferred to improve the quality and danger of encounters rather than simply increasing the number of completely new creatures, a choice that makes every combat more challenging even for the most experienced players.

The monsters' artificial intelligence also appears more evolved in the advanced areas of the expansion, with enemies capable of better taking advantage of environmental conditions, snowstorms, and terrain conformation to put the group in difficulty. This contributes to making every expedition more tense and unpredictable, especially during the exploration of the most remote areas of the Desolate Domain.

The final result is an expansion that primarily aims to enrich the endgame of Dragon's Dogma 2. The Desolate Domain, the relic system, the twelve Trial Grounds, new rewards, and a selection of tougher adversaries transform Dark Arisen into much more than a simple narrative DLC, offering dozens of additional hours dedicated to exploration, character growth, and the search for ultimate equipment. For those who loved the base game and wanted content specifically designed for high-level characters, this expansion represents exactly what was expected from the return of the Dark Arisen name.
