Subnautica 2 Aims to Deeply Evolve the Series: All the Information Here
We've seen Subnautica 2 up close: the new chapter introduces online co-op and an alien planet full of mysteries.
We participated in the virtual conference dedicated to Subnautica 2, during which Unknown Worlds showed a closer look at the new chapter of the series in view of its Early Access arrival. The event allowed us to delve into the game's setup, narrative component, main new features, and how the studio intends to develop this new adventure together with the community.
What is Subnautica 2?
Subnautica 2 is a survival underwater adventure set in a new alien world. Developed by Unknown Worlds, the game represents the new chapter in the series after Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero.
The basic structure remains recognizable: the player is driven to explore a hostile environment, gather resources, build tools, and progressively understand the dynamics of an unknown ecosystem. This time, however, the experience introduces a central novelty for the series: the possibility of tackling the adventure in online co-op with up to four players.
Subnautica 2 is still designed for those who prefer to play solo. Co-op simply expands how exploration is experienced, transforming the alien ocean into a space to discover alone or with other players.
The plot of Subnautica 2: a new story
The story takes the player to a new alien planet. The protagonist is part of a group of pioneers traveling to a new home, having been forced to abandon their own. Along the way, however, something goes wrong.
The colonial ship Cicada does not escort the passengers to a safe haven. The onboard artificial intelligence continues to support the mission, despite the planet reached seeming unsuitable for human survival. This is where one of the most interesting narrative cores of Subnautica 2 emerges: to survive, it may not be enough to adapt to the environment, but it may become necessary to redefine what it means to “be human.”
The game invites players to investigate the reasons behind the AI's determination, but also to understand what happened to the planet. The biomes are alive and populated by numerous creatures, yet the world seems to be experiencing an evident imbalance. The narrative progression therefore appears closely linked to scientific exploration, scanning life forms, studying the local ecosystem, and survival.
The gameplay of Subnautica 2
The gameplay of Subnautica 2 takes the series' survival foundations and expands them with new possibilities. The player will have to gather resources, craft tools, build bases, and gradually venture beyond the safer waters.
Among the tools shown are essential elements like scanners and flashlights, alongside more advanced equipment and new submersible vehicles. The game also introduces the Tadpole, a vehicle designed to traverse the planet's biomes and reach deeper areas.
Great attention has also been dedicated to base building. Unknown Worlds speaks of a revamped system, with more customizable structures and tools designed to better adapt to the game world. In co-op, this component could take on an even more central role, allowing players to explore and build together.
One of the most interesting new features, however, concerns the study of creatures. The player will be able to analyze the planet's life forms, from the smallest species to the Leviathans. Through the Biosampler, it will be possible to collect samples and deepen knowledge of the ecosystem. This information will also be linked to the character's genetic evolution, who can modify their body to better adapt to survival.
When is Subnautica 2 coming out?
Subnautica 2 will arrive in Early Access on May 14, 2026. The game will be available on Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows Store, and Xbox Series X|S via Game Preview, with availability also on Xbox Game Pass.
Unknown Worlds has clarified that Subnautica 2 is still a project in full evolution. During Early Access, the game world will be expanded with new biomes, creatures, constructions, and narrative content.
This choice is consistent with the very nature of the series, which has built an important part of its identity through its relationship with the community. Subnautica 2 therefore presents itself as a project destined to grow over time, keeping exploration, survival, construction, and discovery at its core.
