2026 is the year of CM Punk

What do you do once you've reached the top of the ladder? What challenges does a world heavyweight champion face? No, we're not delirious, but these are all questions stimulated by the imminent arrival of WWE 2K26, the new chapter in the in-ring (and extra-ring) simulation from 2K and Visual Concepts in collaboration with WWE, the world's most popular wrestling federation. Indeed, because the previous edition was already a great game, in which an evident ambition towards excellence shone through, just missing out by a handful of details. The analogy with a world champion's stimuli and motivations, however, is not thrown in by chance, because CM Punk, the current WWE World Heavyweight Champion, and prodigal son who returned to WWE after slamming the door in 2014, will be featured on the cover of the standard edition of WWE 2K26.

The many faces of WWE 2K26

If you're one of those who pay attention to details, you'll have noticed that we mentioned the standard edition, obviously because the game will also be available in other premium formats: specifically, we can confirm the arrival of a King of Kings Edition with HH on the cover, as well as an Attitude Era Edition and a Monday Night War Edition, with numerous wrestlers from the respective eras depicted on the cover. If we can tell you this with certainty, it's because in recent days we were able to participate in a meeting with the developers of Visual Concepts who shared a first handful of information about their new title behind closed doors, destined to arrive on shelves (if they still exist) and in virtual stores within a few weeks.

Since we were talking about formats, another relevant novelty of WWE 2K26 will be the overcoming of classic post-launch DLCs, replaced by the Ringside Pass, a plan based on the widespread battle pass model consisting of 60 free tiers and another 40 premium ones. However, this is one of the aspects that the developers will explain better later, although they were keen to immediately clarify that the good old Supercharger, i.e., the paid boost that traditionally allowed unlocking a lot of content in one go, will be replaced by an equivalent unlockable in the first free tier of Season 1. The underlying philosophy is that those who want to unlock everything (or almost everything) by playing and collecting XP will be able to do so, while those who want to can resort to dirty money.

The year of the Chicago Punk

As mentioned earlier, CM Punk will be the cover man for this year's edition, and as per tradition, he takes the spotlight in the new Showcase. If you recall, however, a series of innovations to the formula were already introduced last year, with a mix of genuinely fought matches and others imagined by twisting past storylines or organizing crossovers made impossible by age differences. This year, it's replicated with Fantasy Warfare, sections of the Showcase where you'll find yourself facing real what ifs, such as imagining what would have happened if Punk had never left WWE in 2014.

The developers then provided further indications on cross-cutting innovations for all modes, starting with a further improvement of collision physics, which was already impressive last year, especially with the ropes, as well as a revision to Reverse and Stamina. Intergender matches, which pit wrestlers of different sexes against each other, can now also be used outside of Exhibitions, freely drawing from a huge roster of over 400 athletes. Of course, new match types (I Quit, Inferno, Dumpster, Three Stages of Hell) and new weapons are indispensable, among which thumbtacks stand out (which apparently will injure wrestlers in different places through physics-driven collisions!). The most interesting novelty, however, from our point of view, is the introduction of interactive entrances, which will no longer be just a catwalk for the wrestler of the moment, but also an opportunity to light up the arena with pyro, or to quickly run into the ring and surprise the opponent. However, expect something new from rivals in these situations: how would you react to the offer of a friendly handshake?

Wait a moment though, since we're in the mood for questions, I have a more pertinent one: how would you react if Liv Morgan burst into one of your work calls? It actually happened to us during the presentation with the Visual Concepts developers! Don't believe us? Hit play!

The Island, the Universe, the GM, and all the others

As mentioned earlier, the Visual Concepts developers clarified several times during the presentation that what was revealed represents only a small part of the new features you can expect from WWE 2K26. Others will be announced later, closer to the game's release. For now, however, we can add that the MyUniverse mode will finally have double the number of customization slots (loudly requested by fans), as well as the introduction of the WWE Draft (the exchange of wrestlers between Raw and SmackDown) and new Money in the Bank cash-ins. If you love the managerial aspect, MyGM will allow you to manage even more shows than before, while MyFaction gets the long-awaited Quick Swaps. And The Island? The new sandbox section that debuted on PS5 and Xbox Series will also be present at launch this year, with more content and several new features… which Visual Concepts intends to discuss later. For now, there's enough to chew on, but we can add one last piece of information: the game will be playable from March 6 for owners of the special versions and officially released in the Standard Edition on March 13
