007 First Light, everything we know about the project that relaunches James Bond in video games
IO Interactive tells the ascent of a young MI6 agent in a single-player adventure with cinematic ambitions.
More than ten years after the last significant chapter dedicated to the British secret agent, the world of video games once again tackles one of the most iconic figures in popular imagination. With 007 First Light, IO Interactive opens a new phase of the franchise by choosing to tell the origins of James Bond through a standalone story. This results in a project that aims to redefine the relationship between the character and the video game medium, focusing on the decisive moment when a young MI6 agent is called upon to prove he deserves 00 status.

The Plot of 007 First Light
007 First Light is an action-adventure developed and published by IO Interactive, built around an original story that draws from the imagery created by Ian Fleming and the long cinematic tradition dedicated to the secret agent. The narrative focuses on the early days of James Bond, here depicted as a 26-year-old MI6 agent, still far from the iconic figure established in the collective imagination.
The narrative structure is linear: following the path that leads Bond to achieve 00 status. The mission assigned to him becomes a decisive test, the passage that defines his identity and role within the British secret service. The protagonist is portrayed by Patrick Gibson; surrounding him are new interpretations of historical characters such as M, Q, and Miss Moneypenny, along with new figures like mentor John Greenway, DGSE agent Charlotte Roth, Selina Tan, and antagonist Bawma.
The Gameplay of 007 First Light
The gameplay of 007 First Light reflects the experience gained by IO Interactive with the Hitman trilogy, reinterpreted in a more explicitly cinematic key. It is a third-person action-adventure with a linear structure, built on missions that alternate between infiltration and spectacular sequences. It is not an open world and does not include multiplayer modes: the experience is entirely single-player.
The stealth component remains central. Players can choose whether to act in the shadows, utilizing cover and technological tools, or opt for a more direct approach in combat. The developers have reiterated the importance of freedom of action, avoiding tying primary objectives to a single solution. In some sections, however, the direction intervenes more decisively, pacing the rhythm through more guided set pieces, designed to convey the spectacular dimension associated with James Bond.
The title also includes driving segments, in line with the saga's tradition, and integrates gadgets provided by Q as an organic part of progression. Technically, the game utilizes the proprietary Glacier Engine, updated with a volumetric smoke system, ray tracing, and dynamic global illumination, solutions that contribute to defining the atmosphere of the missions and improving the readability of environments.
007 First Light, Connections to Films
The game does not adapt any cinematic chapter nor does it reproduce the likenesses of the actors who have portrayed Bond on the big screen. This is an autonomous version of the character, designed from the outset for the video game medium. A choice that marks a discontinuity from some past experiences and confirms the desire to delineate a Bond unconstrained by cinematic incarnations.
However, some symbolic elements of the saga remain. A new Omega Seamaster chronograph designed specifically for the game appears, and the Aston Martin Valhalla makes an appearance, both integrated into the gadget system entrusted to Q. The soundtrack also dialogues with tradition, recalling John Barry's historical themes and reinterpreting them in a score that accompanies the protagonist's evolution.
When is 007 First Light Released?
