Werwulf - Willem Dafoe Teases Eggers' Darkest Horror Yet
Icelandic writer and poet Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson also on the screenplay
Willem Dafoe has already seen Werwulf by Robert Eggers, and his judgment suggests a reinterpretation of the werewolf myth that is far from genre conventions. During an interview, the actor described the work as dark and unsettling, emphasizing its beauty and power, adding that the footage does not follow traditional formulas for werewolf stories.
Medieval Folklore Becomes a Curse
Set in England in 1305, the film tells the story of a mute peasant, scarred by childhood trauma and forced to live with a curse that transforms him into a murderous creature during the full moon. When a wolf hunt, organized by order of the king, reaches the region, the survival of his family becomes even more difficult.
Eggers developed the screenplay with Sjón, the pseudonym of the Icelandic writer and poet Sigurjón Birgir Sigurðsson. Already a collaborator of the director for The Northman, the author has also worked with Björk and received an Oscar nomination for the song I've Seen It All, composed for Dancer in the Dark.
The cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Ralph Ineson. Eggers has called Werwulf the darkest project he has ever written, focusing on a medieval imaginary where folklore becomes a concrete threat. The release in Italian cinemas is scheduled for January 1, 2027, in the USA on December 25, 2026.
