Warren Ellis Addresses Accusations After Image Comics Return, Which Doesn't Explain Change of Course

The writer acknowledged hurting several people and claims to have apologized directly to some of them. However, Image's position remains unanswered, as in 2021 it had set precise conditions for working with him again.

Warren Ellis has once again addressed the accusations about his behavior that emerged in 2020, as Image Comics prepares to publish Ghost Drive Station, his new comic created with Lordess Foudre. In the August 16 issue of the Orbital Operations newsletter, the British writer known for Transmetropolitan, Planetary, and the animated series Castlevania said he was able to apologize directly to a group of people and had attempted to make amends for what happened. He also acknowledged having «hurt people», adding that he was sorry and was trying to improve his behavior.

The statements concern the events that in 2020 led to the creation of So Many of Us, a collective formed by over 60 women and non-binary individuals who gathered testimonies related to their relationships with Ellis over more than twenty years. The group described a recurring pattern of emotional manipulation, coercion, grooming, and abuse of the writer's position of power, asking not for his permanent exclusion from the industry, but for a path of accountability and change.

In 2021, Ellis agreed to begin mediated discussions with a portion of the collective, but the process did not reach the desired conclusion. In the latest update published by So Many of Us, dated January 2023, the group explained that, as far as they knew, Ellis had not taken any of the steps required to begin a true process of accountability. The collective therefore considered it impossible to continue under the existing conditions, while reiterating that they did not want to decide who could or could not work with the writer.

It is precisely this precedent that makes the return to Image Comics significant. In 2021, the publisher had stated that it would not work with Ellis again until he had made amends in a way deemed satisfactory by the people involved. Five years later, Image Comics announced Ghost Drive Station without explaining whether that condition had been met. When asked by Popverse what had changed compared to its previous stance, the publisher declined to comment.

Even the initial reactions in the comic book community show a situation less simple than an opposition between those who support Ellis and those who call for a boycott. Katie West, among the first people to speak publicly about his behavior, asked readers not to indiscriminately penalize other authors published by Image for a decision made by the publisher.

Ghost Drive Station will be released in US comic shops on November 18, 2026. The 56-page, black-and-white graphic novella follows an investigator sent to a desert research station, where he discovers an immortality experiment gone awry. Ellis explained that Lordess Foudre has been working on the artwork for about two years.
