The debut of season 5 of Stranger Things certainly didn't go unnoticed, and not just because of the fan frenzy. The launch of the first 4 episodes in fact caused a brief but obvious technical blackout for Netflix, a sign of how much anticipation had exceeded all expectations. The exact moment the episodes became available in the United States, shortly before 8:00 PM on the East Coast, the platform's systems registered such an influx that it blocked access to the service.

On Downdetector, the site that monitors online service anomalies, reports skyrocketed to nearly 14,000 within minutes, a value Netflix only reaches on the most exceptional occasions. Even in Italy, an anomalous increase in alerts was observed, albeit more contained due to the nighttime publication schedule.

The temporary block that seals an audience success

Many users indeed encountered the error codeNSEZ-403”, indicating a connection problem between device and account. For some, these were generic screens that prevented the Home from loading, forcing them to make repeated attempts. On social media, the reaction was immediate, with the series' hashtag quickly accompanied by ironic comments and worried reports.

Netflix clarified that the outage was resolved within 5 minutes, but the setback was enough to turn the anticipation for the premiere into a minor media event. A curious result, especially considering that the platform had increased bandwidth capacity by 30% precisely to circumvent the overload obstacle. Evidently, the return to Hawkins managed to exceed even the most optimistic forecasts.
