The ending of Stranger Things divided audiences and critics. The final episode of the concluding season chose an ambiguous and painful epilogue, far from the classic happy ending many expected. Now, however, it emerges that Netflix and the Duffer brothers had initially envisioned a very different conclusion.

In the version that aired (SPOILER), Vecna is defeated, but Eleven decides to sacrifice herself, disappearing along with the Upside Down to protect those she loves. No celebration, no definitive answers: only silence, pain, and a time jump that leaves open a possibility, never confirmed, about her survival.

Discovering the latest production

The documentary A Final Adventure: Stranger Things 5: Behind the Scenes however revealed that an alternative ending existed. In that draft Eleven didn't truly die: Hopper was aware of the plan, the farewell was shared and more intimate, and the final message less gloomy. A note in the writer's room was clear: “El is gone (not dead).”

That idea was abandoned during production. The Duffers consciously chose not to give answers, explaining that clarifying too much would have weakened the weight of the sacrifice. The characters don't know the truth, and neither should the audience. A brighter ending would have been more reassuring. But the chosen one, precisely because it is painful and incomplete, is consistent with the soul of the series. And that's why it continues to spark debate.
