Bethesda Softworks has officially unveiled the future content for Starfield. The sci-fi epic will be enriched with two updates: the first is Free Lanes, the largest free update ever released. The second is Terran Armada, a new paid story DLC (priced at €9.99). Both updates will be available from April 7th: let's look at them in detail.

Details on Free Lanes

The main feature of the Free Lanes update is the ability to fly between planets with your spaceship. By enabling cruise mode, players can let the ship proceed autonomously and engage in other activities during the journey, such as interacting with crew members. Space travel will be made more dynamic by a new series of events, both combat and non-combat.

Free Lanes introduces a new resource, called X-Tech, which allows for further customization of weapons, equipment, and ships. Each outpost will be equipped with a container, allowing deposited items to be available at all outposts (like Resident Evil's chests). These locations can be modified as desired and enhanced with amenities such as a "pet" or a collection of action figures.

More demanding players can even purchase a base located on an asteroid. But that's not all: there's a new space station, Anchorpoint, with many new side missions; planets have been enriched with extra points of interest; the new vehicle Jumper will allow for enormous leaps, especially where gravity is low; furthermore, there's a vast series of additional content, including ship modules and skins.

The new Database allows you to keep track of all information learned in the game: this is a very useful quality of life feature when looking for something specific, such as a particular resource to collect. The Astral Abilities have been improved, making them more accessible to upgrade. Finally, the New Game+ mode has also been refined, allowing the user to carry over up to 200 items.

Details on Terran Armada

In Starfield's new DLC, a new threat looms over the Settled Systems: the Terran Armada, a highly militarized faction composed mainly of robotic soldiers, whose members believe themselves to be the "true" children of Earth. The intentions of this new force are unclear, but the war that will erupt will have repercussions throughout the galaxy. Not all components of the Terran Armada are hostile: among them is Delta, a reprogrammed robot who will become a new companion.

The DLC introduces the Incursions system, a series of repeatable events with lucrative loot. Terran Armada Incursions can occur anywhere in the Settled Systems, and it will be up to the player to decide whether or not to intervene. Their scope will vary greatly: there will be brief skirmishes with enemies, as well as large-scale infiltrations by Terran ships. Some Incursions will be part of the story; for others, you can adjust the frequency with which they appear.
