Sonic surprises everyone with a cameo in a non-Sonic film
The unexpected encounter in another franchise has a very specific explanation
Sonic will make an appearance in Angry Birds 3 - Family Earthquake, the new animated film dedicated to the famous characters born from Rovio's mobile video game. The presence of SEGA's blue hedgehog was revealed by the trailer, in a sequence showing him running in a forest alongside Chuck, the series' super-fast yellow bird.
An unexpected encounter but with a precise explanation: in 2023, SEGA acquired Rovio Entertainment, bringing the two famous video game properties under the same ownership. Paramount Pictures also contributes to making this collaboration possible, as they distribute both cinematic productions.
Cameo that doesn't foreshadow a shared universe
For now, it is unclear how much screen time Sonic will have in the story. The trailer only shows a brief appearance and does not clarify whether the character will also have dialogue. Therefore, there are no elements to speak of a true crossover between the two sagas.
Angry Birds 3 - Family Earthquake, directed by John Rice, will bring Red and his companions back to the screen seven years after the previous installment. The story will see the protagonist grappling with fatherhood and a new threat. Jason Sudeikis and Josh Gad will return to the original voice cast. The release in Italian cinemas is currently scheduled for January 1, 2027, while in US cinemas it will be December 23, 2026.
