Sonic at the Olympics: Agreement Signed
SEGA's hedgehog ready to compete
Sonic the Hedgehog is ready to return to the Olympics! SEGA's blue hedgehog mascot is no stranger to sports competitions: most will probably remember the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series, where all the brand's characters, along with their Nintendo friends, competed in all kinds of events.
The aforementioned series ended in 2019-2020 with the chapter related to the Tokyo Games; at the time, something "broke" between the house of Mario and the Olympic committee: Nintendo was supposed to be an official sponsor of the event, the mustachioed plumber the main mascot, and even the music for the opening ceremony was supposed to come from the company's games. A few months before the event - which was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic - the big N instead pulled out of the agreement, Mario was never shown during the games, and the entrance music was chosen from other Japanese video game brands, such as Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter, and Final Fantasy.
Apparently, however, the disagreement does not concern SEGA, which announced on the Sonic the Hedgehog X profile that it has signed a new agreement with the International Olympic Committee and shown new logos with the mascot engaged in both summer sports, like running, and winter sports, like snowboarding.
Currently, however, no video game has been announced, so it is reasonable to think that the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics will not be accompanied by Sonic and his friends. Eyes are therefore on Los Angeles in 2028 for the "traditional" Summer Olympics.
P.S. Poor Amy in the logo has turned green... oh well, the pink ring isn't there! We'll get over it...
