After capturing audiences with Looper and reinventing the whodunit with Knives Out, Rian Johnson is ready to return to the territory that most belongs to him: science fiction. The American director revealed to Empire magazine that he is working on a new original project that will blend mystery, tension, and technology, with the unsettling atmosphere of great '70s thrillers.

“I’m developing an idea that I’m really excited about: it’s close to the paranoid films of that period, but with a touch of light science fiction,” Johnson explained, implying that the film will be more psychological than spectacular, but still full of twists and reflections on our relationship with reality.

Unpredictable, Unconventional Author

After Looper (2012), which combined time travel and moral dilemmas, Johnson had traversed very different genres, moving from Star Wars: The Last Jedi to the refined mysteries of Glass Onion. Now he seems to want to return to a more intimate and philosophical cinema, where suspense intertwines with the eternal question: how much can we trust the world around us?

Still without a title or release date, the project could mark a new collaboration with Netflix, with whom the director maintains a strong creative bond. One thing is certain: when Rian Johnson decides to explore new universes, nothing turns out as expected — and that's precisely why everything immediately becomes more intriguing.
