Nintendo Sues US Government Over Trump Tariffs
The House of Mario wants damages reimbursed
On February 20, the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling that could have profound consequences for US economic policy (and the rest of the world): the one with which it rejected the tariffs desired by President Donald Trump. It was easily predictable that the imposition of high customs duties would have a significant impact on many sectors, including that of video games: we had talked about it already at the time of Trump's election, a few months before these tariffs became a reality.
Nintendo's Lawsuit
The Supreme Court's ruling is already having its effects: companies that have been damaged by Trump's tariffs are moving to understand if and how they can obtain a reimbursement for the damages suffered. Among these large industrial realities, we find Nintendo: the House of Mario was particularly penalized by the tariffs due to producing its hardware in China (as do its competitors, for that matter).
Nintendo has appealed to The United States Court of International Trade in New York, which is the civil court competent in international trade matters, with a summons that names various entities belonging to the American government. Based on the recent Supreme Court ruling, the Japanese company is requesting compensation for the economic damages suffered due to the tariffs, plus related interest.
