Marvel Studios has decided not to proceed with Wonder Man, ending the series after just one season on Disney+. The news is surprising, especially since it comes shortly after statements from co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton, who had hinted at the possibility of developing new episodes.
Andrew Guest confirmed the series' cancellation with a message posted on social media, expressing his pride in the work done. The protagonist of the series is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who plays Simon Williams, alongside Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery.
Ratings Outweighed Critical Enthusiasm
From a qualitative standpoint, Wonder Man had garnered very positive reviews, even earning an Emmy nomination for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Audience reception, however, was not as convincing: according to reports, the production only appeared in the streaming Top 10 during its debut week, quickly falling out of the rankings.
Furthermore, a second season had never truly entered the development phase. The writers' room was not opened, and the screenwriters were released from their respective contracts. The cancellation does not, however, rule out a return of the characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to studio insiders, Simon Williams and the other protagonists could be repurposed in future films or series, even if Wonder Man will not have a dedicated sequel.
