With the Italian 4K Ultra HD release, Jackie Brown finally returns to being seen for what it truly is: not a minor title, but Quentin Tarantino's most sober and adult film. A work that, years later, gains strength precisely because of its apparent discretion.

Based on Elmore Leonard's 1992 novel Rum Punch, which Tarantino co-wrote the screenplay for, the film abandons pulp explosiveness to tell the story of a tired America, populated by second-tier criminals and dreams now on sale. The new 4K edition enhances the faces, silences, and extended pacing of a direction that works more by subtraction than by shock.

Now a Tarantino Classic

At its center is an extraordinary Pam Grier, who gives Jackie a rare dignity in crime cinema: a woman who doesn't run, doesn't shoot more than others, but observes and waits for the right moment. Alongside her, Samuel L. Jackson shines, slimy and irresistible in the role of Ordell Robbie, the ex-con and killer played by Bob De Niro, and Robert Forster, the moral heart of the film in one of the roles of a lifetime.

A work that brings to the screen that melancholy atmosphere that looks back at the seventies without easy nostalgia. Revisiting Jackie Brown in 4K today means rediscovering a Tarantino who doesn't raise his voice, but leaves a longer-lasting mark.

Shot analog 35mm (Moviecam Compact) on 500 ASA negative, so the grain present in the images is part of the cinematography's DNA by Guillermo Navarro (Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim among many). Original image format 1.85:1 (3840 x 2160/23.97p), HEVC encoding from 4K master, triple-layer BD-100. Warm, intense colors and superior fidelity even for lights thanks to Dolby Vision. Superior technical performance to the 2K Blu-ray, BD-50 included here, for a virtuous spectacle closer to the theatrical experience, deep blacks and a virtuous viewing especially on native 10-bit panels.

DTS-HD MA 2.0 Italian (16 bit) with decent rendering, which from an HT system delivers more than one emotion between dialogues and music. The original DTS-HD MA 5.1 (16 bit) is a completely different scene, opening up to excellent listening and superior involvement, with separate channels and dynamic richness.
