Heroes of the Storm Resurrects from the Void: Xal’atath Arrives September 28
Blizzard breaks a nearly six-year hiatus. The World of Warcraft: Midnight antagonist will debut on the PTR first, and another new hero has already been teased.
Heroes of the Storm hasn't announced a full relaunch yet, but something in the Nexus has started moving again. During the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, Blizzard unveiled Xal’atath as the MOBA's next playable character. She is the first hero added since Hogger, who arrived in 2020. According to the announcement during the event, Xal’atath will be available on the PTR starting September 14, while her debut on live servers is set for September 28, 2026.
Those who follow World of Warcraft are well acquainted with the character. Xal’atath has become one of the central figures in the most recent saga and is notably the antagonist of Midnight. Her entry into Heroes of the Storm, however, is also significant for another reason: Blizzard hadn't added a new hero to the game in almost six years. Such a long absence led many to believe that the roster was destined to remain as it was.
After all, in July 2022, Blizzard itself had practically put Heroes of the Storm into maintenance mode. In the statement dedicated to the game's future, the studio explained that updates would focus on client stability, bug fixes, and, when necessary, balance adjustments.
It would therefore be premature to speak of a new life for Heroes of the Storm. There is no roadmap, no new maps have been announced, and Blizzard has not stated any intention to return to the production pace of its best years. Xal’atath, however, should not be an isolated incident. During BlizzCon, the arrival of another hero was also teased, though for now, we know neither their identity nor their release window.
It's still too little to talk about a true comeback, but after years spent almost exclusively on maintenance and balancing, Heroes of the Storm finally has something new to look forward to.
