FRITZ!OS 8.50 - New Features for FRITZ!Box Routers
On compatible devices, the router also recognizes applications such as online video games and video conferences
The distribution of FRITZ!OS 8.50 for the FRITZ!Box 7690 began on September 29, 2026, with the release continuing for other compatible models in the FRITZ!Box and FRITZ!Repeater range. Among the new features is a DNS filter that allows blocking unwanted domains by importing external lists. The filter enables users to define which domains to make inaccessible from the home network, based on custom or publicly available lists.
The MyFRITZ!App introduces Smart Check, a tool that analyzes network status and suggests how to resolve any issues. On compatible devices, the router also recognizes applications such as online video games and video conferences, automatically assigning them priority to limit slowdowns.
New Features for Telephony and Smart Home
FRITZ! Failsafe is extended to compatible 4G and 5G routers, which can use the mobile network as a backup connection in case of a main connection outage. For FRITZ!Fon, a simplified mode with SOS calls to pre-set contacts is introduced. Smart plugs gain new automations and protections, while the FRITZ!Box 5690 Pro can function as a Matter bridge to integrate compatible devices into supported smart home ecosystems.
Installation can be initiated from the router's interface by typing fritz.box in the browser, or left to automatic updates. To learn all the details of FRITZ!OS 8.50 and check the new features planned for individual devices, it is possible to consult the official FRITZ! Italy page.
