Fantastic Four: Concepts Emerge for Canceled Fox Film
The project was shelved when the second film didn't meet box office expectations
Images released by concept artist Jerad S. Marantz bring to light one of the most curious unfinished projects from the Fox era: the third installment dedicated to the Fantastic Four, which remained on paper after the release of the second film in 2007.
Created in 2009, the sketches show a clear evolution of the protagonists. Reed Richards would have sported a more mature look, with a beard and an appearance suggesting a time jump in the narrative. Sue and Johnny Storm also featured updated costumes and aesthetic details, while Ben Grimm would have become even more imposing, with numerous variants designed to accentuate his mass and rocky texture.
How Fox's Fantastic Four Would Have Changed
Among the most surprising elements is the presence of the Skrulls. Marantz confirmed that he also worked on their design, indicating that Fox was considering expanding the team's universe with new antagonists from the comics.
The project was shelved when the second film did not achieve the desired box office results, prompting the studio to change strategy. Today, these concepts take on particular value: with the Fantastic Four having entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they represent a glimpse into a direction that never made it to the big screen, but which could have changed the fate of the saga long before the current Marvel Studios relaunch.
