Discord: Age-Verification Postponed, New Clarifications

We'll talk about it calmly in a few months

Discord, the hugely popular social platform primarily used as a voice-chat service in PC gaming – but certainly not exclusively – plunged into a whirlwind of controversy when a few weeks ago it announced that starting next March, it might impose age-verification on its users, meaning the need to prove they are over 18 years old.

After a poorly received announcement and the swift addendum released just a couple of days later, the company is now further doing its mea-culpa, and through CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy, it has published a new update on the matter, which, among other things, announces a postponement of the implementation until the second half of 2026.

"We made communication mistakes – confesses Vishnevskiy – in hindsight, we should have provided more details about our intentions and how the process works. The way we put it, many of you walked away thinking we would require face scans or document uploads from everyone just to use Discord. That's not what's happening, but the fact that so many people think that makes us realize we failed at our most basic job: clearly illustrating what we are doing and why. We know many of you believe the right answer is not to do it at all: we heard you."

The statement continues by explaining, however, that the company has "its hands tied" by new regulatory norms imposed by various nations, primarily the USA, and promises greater clarity and transparency regarding its processes; in fact, the agenda does not seem to have changed significantly except for the application date.

Discord and the Age-Verification That Will Come

Essentially, then, this is what Vishnevskiy communicated regarding Discord's upcoming policy:

  • age-verification requests will not start before the second half of 2026;
  • various age verification systems will be implemented, such as credit card verification;
  • greater transparency will be imposed on products sold by Discord's partners within the platform;
  • new "spoiler" options for channels will be introduced to ensure that such content does not reach minors without a preventive filter;
  • before the global launch, a tech-post with all the details of the operation will be released.

We should also remember that in the aforementioned addendum, Discord had hastened to declare that for most users, no age-verification would be required, as the data already in its possession, processed by algorithms and AI, should be sufficient to establish a priori that they are adult users.
