Cyberpunk 2: Multiplayer in Sight?

CD Projekt RED's Hiring Spree

When Cyberpunk 2077 was first announced and shown to the public, it promised the moon and the stars, and among other things, there was persistent talk of implementing an Online Multiplayer mode. As time inexorably passed and the game, hastily launched in 2020, initially proved to be a disaster, all of CD Projekt RED's efforts were channeled into correcting errors and finally bringing the game to the glory it deserved – thus abandoning multiplayer.

Evidently, however, the idea lingered, and in the past, CDPR had already confirmed its intention to introduce the mode in the game's sequel, codenamed Orion. Now, new confirmations are arriving directly from the team that the Polish SH has assembled in Boston with the aim of building the project by personally studying the society, architecture, and urban development of a large American city.

The team has indeed issued a job opening within its ranks, seeking a Lead Network Engineer whose role will consist of "leading your team in developing and optimizing a multiplayer system, including matchmaking, and addressing challenges related to latency, bandwidth usage, and server performance."
In short: the ABCs of a state-of-the-art online multiplayer infrastructure.

Currently, CDPR seems to be primarily focused on the development of The Witcher 4, which we recall was announced at the last Game Awards but for which a release date is not yet known. Cyberpunk Orion is therefore still considered to be in a preliminary phase, but the fact that the dedicated multiplayer team is already being formed suggests that this time the mode will be central to the development.

All that remains is to wait...
